What Is the Fourth Trimester?

The Fourth Trimester is a term coined by Dr. Harvey Karp to describe the first three months of a baby’s life after birth. Dr. Karp explains that babies are essentially born too soon—if given the choice, they would stay in the womb for a few extra months! During this tender stage, newborns crave the comfort of womb-like sensations, such as Dr. Karp’s The 5 S’s for Soothing Baby.

Postpartum Doulas…

Postpartum doulas nurture new families during the early weeks and months, caring for the whole family in the home after birth or adoption.

We provide:

  • Non-medical support and companionship

  • Assistance with newborn care, breastfeeding, and sibling adjustment

  • Light meal preparation and light household tasks

  • Guidance as parents discover their own parenting style

We also offer OVERNIGHT support, often called “night nurse” or “night nanny” services, to maximize sleep for new parents.

At MBB, we lovingly serve families throughout the childbearing year. Our passion is to help you feel supported and empowered. We aim to work ourselves out of a job—because as your sleep quality and confidence grow, our mission is complete! Families thrive when support is present during the Fourth Trimester, and being part of that journey brings us great joy!

Who will support you during the fourth trimester?

Our trained, experienced postpartum doulas provide emotional, physical, and educational support during this critical time. They nurture the family, offer evidence-based education, and connect you with community resources as needed.

In today’s culture, most new mothers have very little support—making holistic postpartum care more important than ever.

With postpartum doula support, you can expect:

  • Reduced risk of postpartum mood disorders

  • Quicker recovery with compassionate, non-judgmental guidance

  • Better sleep through overnight support for baby care

  • Improved partner satisfaction (from an average of 30% to 71%!)

Invest in your marriage or relationship by securing support before sleep deprivation and other challenges take hold in the vulnerable Fourth Trimester.

Postpartum Care Provides:

  • Daytime or Overnight services (4-hour daytime shifts or 8-hour overnight shifts)

The Postpartum Doula Helps By:

  • Allowing the mother to rest, shower, and nurture herself

  • Encouraging proper nutrition and hydration

  • Listening to and validating the birth story

  • Supporting fathers/partners in their transition to new roles

  • Caring for older siblings during adjustment

  • Offering infant soothing education and bonding support

  • Helping parents find their own unique style of nurturing

And yes—even fur babies get love! We can give attention to family pets to ease their adjustment to a new baby at home.
